It started at the barn.
We grew up on a horse farm, so most of our childhood was spent riding, going to shows, mucking stalls and looking after horses. Long before Avella had a name, the barn was already home.
Before the packaging, there were Ziploc bags.
The treats had been around our barn for a while before they ever became a brand. One summer, we started baking small batches in the farm kitchen and packing them into Ziploc bags for friends, family and people around the barn. Then we went back to university and stopped making them.
People kept asking when the treats were coming back.
We kept hearing the same thing: their horses loved them. Some owners told us they were the only treats their horse would eat. So the next summer, we decided to bring them back and see where this little thing could go.
So we gave it a name.
Happy Horse was our first real version of the brand. We designed our first packaging, kept baking from the farm kitchen, and started bringing the treats with us to tack stores, horse shows, clinics and events.
Slowly, the little bags we'd been making for people around the barn started finding their way to horses we'd never met.
Happy Horse became Avella.
As the brand grew, so did our idea of what we wanted the treats to be. We simplified the recipe, added more fibre and reduced the sugar and starch, while keeping the same soft, moist texture horses had loved from the beginning. And Avella became the brand we'd always wanted to build.
